Rear Extension

Planning Authority: Brighton and Hove

Existing Property

A two storey, end of terrace home in Brighton and Hove.

Design Summary

A rear extension to provide the home with a better functioning and better connected kitchen, dining space with an internal laundry. The design brief was to maintain the feeling of a coastal property, that engaged with the small rear garden.

Proposal, Design approach and Materials

The proposed single storey has a dual pitched roof, providing the new rear space with a vaulted ceiling. The extension will be finished in blackened timber panelled, with the dual pitched roof using the same red clay tiles of the existing building. A lower brick “skirt” ties the new extension in with the existing masonry. Large rooflights on each pitch of the new extension and a large opening Crittal style door provide increased levels of natural light to the new kitchen and dining area.

Bespoke cabinetry to the partitioning wall between the new kitchen/dining area and internal laundry not only provides storage but also a beautiful focal point within the space.

On site issues

As with all projects, issues arise on site. Here we have encountered miscalculated steel work and asbestos. By good communication between Builders, Structural Engineer and Building Control these issues were resolved within days and have not impacted the timeline or budget.

We are all very excited to see this project completed.
